Getting ready for that good ol' test

I'm really frusturated with blogger. I wrote a lot and it deleted everything I wrote.
Anyways today in class we started off our morning with
a lovely Quadratic Function Pre-Test

Our first question on the pre-test was:
What are the coordinates of the vertex of the parabola defined by:

To find the answer you first need to change this into a different form which is:

When changing it into this form it turns out to be:
f(x) = -3 x- (-4)^2 -5

This then makes the vertex = (-4,-5)

Everything that we did in class today, was said in a lot of other post's by the previous scribes.

A few tips for the test tommorow.
1. When you come a long a question that has a lot of parts to it... DRAW! it's a lot easier! and it will help you in what you are supposed to find!
2. READ the question carefully to see what they are asking for. Sometimes you can skip out steps.. so you're not wasting any time.
3. CHECK YOUR ANSWERS! (when you can)

Dr Evitar posted all the slides for the answers on the pre-test earlier today.

HAVE A LOOK AT THEM & if you have any problems with questions..
I'm completely sure if you look at the previous blogs you'll find answers!
They are extremely detailed AND will definitely help you out a lot!
Well, it did with me :)

Good luck on the test tommorow!
AND STUDY HARD!

Thanks a lot for choosing me for the blogger -_- but anyways... today the teacher asked if anyone that doesn't have a blogging account please make one asap. Also we had to hand in our homework which was called Completing the square exercise.

After that was done we worked on the questions on that exercise.

so she explained that if you had gotten the top formula and you were trying to find the vertex that you would have to re-write it into that formula under the top formula.

Root : y = 0
so if you were looking for the root you would have to look for where "y" = to ZERO

so you would have to re-arrange your formula into a (x-h)² = -k

  • vertex is (-h , k)
  • root : -b ± √ k/a ( negative b, plus or negative square root of k over a )
  • then you find the square root of "k" over "a" and add h

how to make a perfect square:

The question we worked on today was:
y= 2(x - 3)² -5
on the question we found out that, (3 , -5) was the vertex

one of the roots is going to be at 3 and the other ones is around 1 :

* if you have a positive in front of the ax² your parabola will be facing upwards and if negative it will be facing downwards.

we looked at math question we had looked at before and we drew it:

^ what i did up there is i found "b" and it was 64 and plugged it in and than multiply everything by 5 since h-6 was already divided by 5 so it cancels out so i found what the t and the 'h'

the teacher said that:
make sure what the question is before you start on the question cause you might be finding the wrong thing. this question was asking for the vertex and the time only so you didn't have to find the root.

last but not least make sure you guys study we have a pre-test tomorrow and the actual test on Thursday

hope you guys understood everything ☺

OH YEAH .. NEXT "SCRIBE" IS RHEANNE☺ HAHA!

Completing The Square

hello! everyone this is Ramina :) and I'm the one who's scribing for today's class.

Completing The Square
- is the process of converting a quadratic equation into a perfect square trinomial by adding or subtracting terms on both sides.

For Example:

To explain it properly please just visit these following website:

1) Completing the square m² + 12m + 30 = 0

2) Completing the square 3n² - 4n - 1 = 0

3) Completing the Square

These are the things that we talked about completing the square....

September 17, 2008 (Wednesday)

Hey their you guys!! So today we went over the homework assignment from the previous day.

<----- Here is the first question we did in class. To solve this you must use Sin law.

Sin A / a = Sin B/b

* Note before this you must find each angles of the triangle. Assuming that each angle must be 90 ..it's as simple as subtracting to find the rest of them. Once you find this you can just add your information to the formula.

Sin 53/1200m = Sin 29/b

0.786/1200m = 0.4539/b -----> cross multiply

1200(0.4539)=o.796b/ o.796

b= 682.8

~ Sin Law is always True if one angle is 90, so are the others.~

*** We corrected the other questions, if you have problems with them don't be afraid to ask for help. Make sure you do your homework!!***

Exercise 5:

So today we did something new.Basically we were finding perfect squares in a trinomial.

4x^2 + 4x +1=0

(2x+1)(2x+1)

(2x+1)^2 .'. This is a perfect square

x^2+8x+k

(x+4)(x+4)

K= 16 .'. This a perfect square

x^2 -5x+k

(x- 5/2)(x- 5/2)

K= 25/4 .'. This is a perfect square

To make a perfect square, your number "c " has to be the square of (b/2) ^2 . It can be any number you like as long as it fit into the equation.

a --- b --- c
x^2+8x+k

c=(A x B/2) ^2 .....this makes a perfect square. Though in some cases it's different.

4x^2+4x+1=0
(2x+1) (2x+1)

(2x+1)^2 In this case. (A x C)= (4/2)^2

Perfect squares are easy you just need to factor it out. Note that you don't need to know about A x C= (4/2)^2 or (b/2)^2 . They are just up here for the benefit of knowledge.

After learning about perfect squares we looked ahead into Exercise 6. Their we discussed question one on that page.
Finding the biggest area of a rectangle. Say they give you 80 m of fencing. Your length and width would be 20m. why? because when you add 2x +2y= 80m .... a.k.a 2(20) + 2(20)= 80m

Sorry If their were any errors on here, I'm not really good at explaining things, especially math.The homework For tonight is Exercise 5 , and the next blogger is :
Rochelle

September 16th PreCal

Today we did...

We started off the class with the question:
Write an equation in the form y=Ax²+K shown above

After that ...
we contintued on Exercise 4 we graphed y=x²-2x-3, y=x²+6x and y=x²+6x+8 shown below

A function is a relationship between the numbers in the Domain and the numbers in the range.

NOTE: a graphing calculator might be a smart thing to have or you'll have to draw a lot of tables of values..

REMEMBER!
questions 7-11 Ex 4 for homework :) if theres any mistakes sorry! next scribe..kayla

September 15, 2008

For today's class, Dr. Eviatar assigned us questions 1-5 on Exercise 3. For the majority of class time, we had to work on Exercise 3, questions 1-5 on our own (or with others). However, for the last 20 minutes (or so) of class time, we were chosen by random or had volunteered to show our work on the smart board/white board.That's pretty much how the day went.

Some important notes.

Sorry for the late post, I wasn't feeling good ):. If you have any comments just write them below, and I'll be sure to try and help you out >_<. The next scriber is... drum roll please!! *insert drum noise here* Stephanie!! :DD

September 12, 2008

Hello, sorry for the delay.
On Friday, we corrected a few questions based on Exercise 2: Graphs of Quadratic Functions 1, questions number 11 and 12.

11.)
x = cost of an ice cream cone
J (x - 24)
K (x - 2)

(x- 24) + (x - 2) < x
2x - 26 < x
x - 26 < 0

24 < x < 26
x = 25

12.)

x = 751m

cos(55) = x / 751

cos(55)*751 = x

430.75m = x

* Another thing we did was make a table.

ex. y = x2 : its vertex, Domain, Range
and the Axis of Symmetry

* y = a (x - h) 2

* 2 means squared

vertex ( h , 0 )

Again, I'm so sorry for the late post. I left class a little early, but I heard that we have to do Exercise 3, question 1. Next scribe is Dylan.

September 11, 2008

For today's class we're back in room 66, I think we're done switching rooms now. Mrs. Ingram is no longer our teacher. We have this new "Dr. Eviatar", she's a PHD in Physics, she will be with us for the next 10 weeks or so until Mr. K is back.

The whole time, we just carry on with our Exercise 2: Graphs of Quadratic Functions.
We have to skip Questions 9 and 10, then just continue the rest of the questions.

Then she posted this formula at the board.
I'm not sure what its for (sorry) but here it is:

Basically that's everything.

I think I should be the scribe again for tomorrow (not that i want to).
but just to be fair for the others, because I didn't really blog anything.
I'll ask our teacher tomorrow if i will still blog or we will move on
but if I were to chose the next random scribe it would be Praisia. :D

Char's posting for September 10, 2008 ^-^

Hello there! (:

For today's class, we continued on with Graphing Quadratic Equations. We were to graph the equations: y=x² and y=x²+1.
Here are my Table of Values & Graph:

y=x²
y=x²+1

Since sketching a graph and making the Table of Values seemed to have taken a lot of time, Mrs. Ingram taught us how to use our graphic calculator.

How to use the graph in a calculator:

Click to enlarge*

Notes:

  • Quadratic Equation in the form of y=ax^2+k

If k is positive the graph will move upwards k units

If k is negative it will move down k units

We spent almost half of the class learning how to use the graphing calculator. It made graphing a lot easier and more accurate than a sketched one. But remember that you should know how to sketch a graph on a paper too.

For the rest of the class, we just worked on our homework.

I'm sorry for posting late. Pardon my explanations if they ever confuse you.
Don't forget that the homework for today is EXERCISE 2 on PAGE 3; QUESTIONS 1-8.

The next random scribe is ...

September 9, 2008

Today's class we continued to talk about Quadratic Functions. We made a quick graph from the equation: y = 2x ^ 2 Using a table of values you can find your x and y values to plot your graph.

Table of Values:

We then discussed about how a Parabola is formed when graphed. We also learned about the vertex and Axis of symmetry.

A vertex is a point where your parabola changes direction. For the graph above, the direction for the red line would be going down then at the point where your parabola changes direction ( for the graph above this point is ( 0, 0 ) ) it will go back upwards and vice versa.

The Axis of symmetry is a line that separates the graph into two equal sides. For the graph above this line is shown by the green line between the points. This line can be anywhere between two points as long as those two sides are equal.

We also made another graph using the equation: y = -2x ^ 2

If a quadratic equation ( y = -2x ^ 2 ) has a positive " a " value your parabola will open upwards. If the " a " value is negative this means the parabola will open downwards.

For homework we had to do Exercise 1 Numbers 7 - 11 and number 13

To my students ...

Hi,

By the time you read this you will already have heard from Mrs. Ingram that I will be away from school for an extended period of time. 10 weeks to be exact. I'll be back on November 17.

On August 18 we had our fourth child, a little girl. Her name is Sadie. My wife and I discussed this a lot. As this is our last child, late last week we decided together that I would take a parental leave of absence.

I must admit I had very mixed feelings about taking the leave of absence. We began learning together and were off to a wonderful start with much hope and promise for the semester ahead. That hasn't changed. You are all capable of being the person, learner, mathematician you imagine yourself to be.

I have always believed that anyone can learn math, even the most advanced math, as long as they see themselves as able to be successful. So much of your success, in school and in life, has to do with believing in yourself; having confidence in yourself. See yourself as a success and you will be successful; in this and in all things.

In my absence you will be learning from one of the finest teachers in our school, yet don't underestimate yourselves. You can also be the finest teachers of each other. Just making the effort to take on that role for each other will deepen your learning and make you better students. You are your own best teachers. Continue to work together. Teach and support each other. And watch yourselves grow into the finest mathematicians in the school.

Mrs. Ingram is a wonderful teacher, I've worked with her for years, I know. Trust and lean on her, and each other, and you'll go far together.

I'm going to spend the next little while just being a dad to my kids. In the meantime I'll be poking in on the blog to see how you're all doing.

Take care of each other. And learn hard.

Your Teacher,
Mr. K

September 8, 2008

For today's class, we finally talked about Quadratic Functions. But before that, I have to inform all of you that Mrs. Ingram will be the one teaching us for the rest of the semester. It is because Mr. K is on maternal leave and have to spend time with his family. :)

Okay, Mrs. Ingram talked about Quadratic Functions and how often we'll use it from now on. Quadratic Function is a function of second degree. This is how a Quadratic Function look like:

* y=ax²+bx+c * Quadratic Function cannot be completed if ax² is not there.

We did a few examples on this. We made table of values and then put it on a graph indicating the Domain and Range...

Table of Values

1.) y=x²

2.) y=2
x²

This (2) coefficient affects our parabola.
The higher your "a" coefficient, the skinnier your parabola will be.

Mrs. Ingram gave us 2 books to use for the semester (Cumulative Exercises & Answers to Cumulative Exercises). Don't forget to do your homework! It's Exercise 1 Numbers 1-4.

September 5, 2008

Hi there... Today, Mr. K. was away, and we didn't expect it because we're all expecting to learn our new topic about Quadratic Function. Basically, we have a substitute and gave us our seat work which became our homework. It's all about Domain and Range. *Interval, and Set Notation*... I also posted the Homework for the week so everyone will see it.

and that's all for today..we're all expecting that everyone will finish their homeworks:D...

Day 2. Sept. 04, 2008

basically today, we did 2 main things. First, Mr. K told us how we are supposed to make our own book for this class. he told the class that this whole blog idea is part of the class participation and each one of us will get to be a scribe (or whatever you call it) for at least 2-3 times. and Mr. K did a good job in orienteering us about how to go around this blogger, which buttons to click, how to get the smart board software (awesome!!) and so on... this idea is cool because it's like a class effort to help each other out.

second main thing was we recalled important terminologies that would be used often in this course. here's the brief summary of our notes today:

Term = parts of an algebraic expression or series separated by + or - signs, or the parts of a sequence separated by commas.
ex. 2xy, 3, 5a3 (5acube)

Monomial =
An algebraic expression with exactly one term.

Binomial = An algebraic expression with exactly 2 terms.

Trinomial =
An algebraic expression with exactly 3 terms.

Polynomial = An algebraic expression with one or more expression.

Degree of a term = the exponent of the variables in the term and with more than one variable the degree is the sum of the exponent.

Degree of a polynomial = the highest degree of any term in the polynomial.

Domain = All permissible inputs for a function.

Range = All permissible outputs for a function.

Quadratic Function = its a function of second degree.

and that's all for today. don't forget that we have that homework on The Garden Problem. it's in that spreadsheet in Google!

next: scribe is camiLLe : )

A New Beginning

Hi There! You found our blog! This is the place to talk about what's happening in class; to ask a question you didn't get a chance to ask in class; to get copies of a handout you didn't get in class (here's the course outline); for parents to find out "How Was School Today;" to share your knowledge with other students. Most importantly it's a place to reflect on what we're learning.

Remember what I said about the Forgetting Curve? Well a big part of Learning and Remembering involves working with and discussing new ideas with other people -- THIS is the place to do just that. Use the comment feature below each post, or make your own post, contribute to the conversation and lets get down to some serious blogging!

Here are the slides from today (your homework is on slide #33):

See you tomorrow.

Cheers,
Mr. K.
