Getting ready for that good ol' test
Anyways today in class we started off our morning with
a lovely Quadratic Function Pre-Test
Our first question on the pre-test was:
What are the coordinates of the vertex of the para

To find the answer you first need to change this into a different form which is:

When changing it into this form it turns out to be:
f(x) = -3 x- (-4)^2 -5
This then makes the vertex = (-4,-5)
Everything that we did in class today, was said in a lot of other post's by the previous scribes.
A few tips for the test tommorow.
1. When you come a long a question that has a lot of parts to it... DRAW! it's a lot easier! and it will help you in what you are supposed to find!
2. READ the question carefully to see what they are asking for. Sometimes you can skip out steps.. so you're not wasting any time.
3. CHECK YOUR ANSWERS! (when you can)
Dr Evitar posted all the slides for the answers on the pre-test earlier today.
HAVE A LOOK AT THEM & if you have any problems with questions..
I'm completely sure if you look at the previous blogs you'll find answers!
They are extremely detailed AND will definitely help you out a lot!
Well, it did with me :)
Good luck on the test tommorow!
AND STUDY HARD!

After that was done we worked on the questions on that exercise.

so she explained that if you had gotten the top formula and you were trying to find the vertex that you would have to re-write it into that formula under the top formula.
Root : y = 0
so if you were looking for the root you would have to look for where "y" = to ZERO
so you would have to re-arrange your formula into a (x-h)² = -k
- vertex is (-h , k)
- root : -b ± √ k/a ( negative b, plus or negative square root of k over a )
- then you find the square root of "k" over "a" and add h
The question we worked on today was:
y= 2(x - 3)² -5
on the question we found out that, (3 , -5) was the vertex
one of the roots is going to be at 3 and the other ones is around 1 :

* if you have a positive in front of the ax² your parabola will be facing upwards and if negative it will be facing downwards.
we looked at math question we had looked at before and we drew it:

^ what i did up there is i found "b" and it was 64 and plugged it in and than multiply everything by 5 since h-6 was already divided by 5 so it cancels out so i found what the t and the 'h'
the teacher said that:
make sure what the question is before you start on the question cause you might be finding the wrong thing. this question was asking for the vertex and the time only so you didn't have to find the root.
last but not least make sure you guys study we have a pre-test tomorrow and the actual test on Thursday
hope you guys understood everything ☺
OH YEAH .. NEXT "SCRIBE" IS RHEANNE☺ HAHA!

Completing The Square
Completing The Square
- is the process of converting a quadratic equation into a perfect square trinomial by adding or subtracting terms on both sides.
For Example:

To explain it properly please just visit these following website:
1) Completing the square m² + 12m + 30 = 0
2) Completing the square 3n² - 4n - 1 = 0
3) Completing the Square
These are the things that we talked about completing the square....

September 16th PreCal

We started off the class with the question:
Write an equation in the form y=Ax²+K shown above
After that ...
we contintued on Exercise 4 we graphed y=x²-2x-3, y=x²+6x and y=x²+6x+8 shown below

A function is a relationship between the numbers in the Domain and the numbers in the range.
NOTE: a graphing calculator might be a smart thing to have or you'll have to draw a lot of tables of values..
REMEMBER!
questions 7-11 Ex 4 for homework :) if theres any mistakes sorry! next scribe..kayla

September 12, 2008
On Friday, we corrected a few questions based on Exercise 2: Graphs of Quadratic Functions 1, questions number 11 and 12.
11.)
x = cost of an ice cream cone
J (x - 24)
K (x - 2)
(x- 24) + (x - 2) < x
2x - 26 < x
x - 26 < 0
24 < x < 26
x = 25
12.)

x = 751m
cos(55) = x / 751
cos(55)*751 = x
430.75m = x
* Another thing we did was make a table.
ex. y = x2 : its vertex, Domain, Range
and the Axis of Symmetry

* y = a (x - h) 2
* 2 means squared
vertex ( h , 0 )
Again, I'm so sorry for the late post. I left class a little early, but I heard that we have to do Exercise 3, question 1. Next scribe is Dylan.

September 11, 2008
The whole time, we just carry on with our Exercise 2: Graphs of Quadratic Functions.
We have to skip Questions 9 and 10, then just continue the rest of the questions.
Then she posted this formula at the board.
I'm not sure what its for (sorry) but here it is:

Basically that's everything.
I think I should be the scribe again for tomorrow (not that i want to).
but just to be fair for the others, because I didn't really blog anything.
I'll ask our teacher tomorrow if i will still blog or we will move on
but if I were to chose the next random scribe it would be Praisia. :D

Char's posting for September 10, 2008 ^-^
For today's class, we continued on with Graphing Quadratic Equations. We were to graph the equations: y=x² and y=x²+1.
Notes:
- Quadratic Equation in the form of y=ax^2+k
If k is positive the graph will move upwards k units
If k is negative it will move down k units
We spent almost half of the class learning how to use the graphing calculator. It made graphing a lot easier and more accurate than a sketched one. But remember that you should know how to sketch a graph on a paper too.
For the rest of the class, we just worked on our homework.
I'm sorry for posting late. Pardon my explanations if they ever confuse you.
Don't forget that the homework for today is EXERCISE 2 on PAGE 3; QUESTIONS 1-8.
The next random scribe is ...
k a r L e e n .

Table of Values:

We then discussed about how a Parabola is formed when graphed. We also learned about the vertex and Axis of symmetry.
A vertex is a point where your parabola changes direction. For the graph above, the direction for the red line would be going down then at the point where your parabola changes direction ( for the graph above this point is ( 0, 0 ) ) it will go back upwards and vice versa.
The Axis of symmetry is a line that separates the graph into two equal sides. For the graph above this line is shown by the green line between the points. This line can be anywhere between two points as long as those two sides are equal.
We also made another graph using the equation: y = -2x ^ 2
If a quadratic equation ( y = -2x ^ 2 ) has a positive " a " value your parabola will open upwards. If the " a " value is negative this means the parabola will open downwards.
For homework we had to do Exercise 1 Numbers 7 - 11 and number 13

To my students ...
Hi,
By the time you read this you will already have heard from Mrs. Ingram that I will be away from school for an extended period of time. 10 weeks to be exact. I'll be back on November 17.
On August 18 we had our fourth child, a little girl. Her name is Sadie. My wife and I discussed this a lot. As this is our last child, late last week we decided together that I would take a parental leave of absence.
I must admit I had very mixed feelings about taking the leave of absence. We began learning together and were off to a wonderful start with much hope and promise for the semester ahead. That hasn't changed. You are all capable of being the person, learner, mathematician you imagine yourself to be.
I have always believed that anyone can learn math, even the most advanced math, as long as they see themselves as able to be successful. So much of your success, in school and in life, has to do with believing in yourself; having confidence in yourself. See yourself as a success and you will be successful; in this and in all things.
In my absence you will be learning from one of the finest teachers in our school, yet don't underestimate yourselves. You can also be the finest teachers of each other. Just making the effort to take on that role for each other will deepen your learning and make you better students. You are your own best teachers. Continue to work together. Teach and support each other. And watch yourselves grow into the finest mathematicians in the school.
Mrs. Ingram is a wonderful teacher, I've worked with her for years, I know. Trust and lean on her, and each other, and you'll go far together.
I'm going to spend the next little while just being a dad to my kids. In the meantime I'll be poking in on the blog to see how you're all doing.
Take care of each other. And learn hard.
Your Teacher,
Mr. K

Okay, Mrs. Ingram talked about Quadratic Functions and how often we'll use it from now on. Quadratic Function is a function of second degree. This is how a Quadratic Function look like:
* y=ax²+bx+c * Quadratic Function cannot be completed if ax² is not there.
We did a few examples on this. We made table of values and then put it on a graph indicating the Domain and Range...
Table of Values
1.) y=x²
2.) y=2x²
↓
This (2) coefficient affects our parabola. The higher your "a" coefficient, the skinnier your parabola will be.
Mrs. Ingram gave us 2 books to use for the semester (Cumulative Exercises & Answers to Cumulative Exercises). Don't forget to do your homework! It's Exercise 1 Numbers 1-4.

Day 2. Sept. 04, 2008
second main thing was we recalled important terminologies that would be used often in this course. here's the brief summary of our notes today:
Term = parts of an algebraic expression or series separated by + or - signs, or the parts of a sequence separated by commas.
ex. 2xy, 3, 5a3 (5acube)
Monomial = An algebraic expression with exactly one term.
Binomial = An algebraic expression with exactly 2 terms.
Trinomial = An algebraic expression with exactly 3 terms.
Polynomial = An algebraic expression with one or more expression.
Degree of a term = the exponent of the variables in the term and with more than one variable the degree is the sum of the exponent.
Degree of a polynomial = the highest degree of any term in the polynomial.
Domain = All permissible inputs for a function.
Range = All permissible outputs for a function.
Quadratic Function = its a function of second degree.
and that's all for today. don't forget that we have that homework on The Garden Problem. it's in that spreadsheet in Google!
